about
Written by Johnny Marks and later popularized by Burls Ives in the Christmas Movie "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
Christmas doesn't have to be all tradition and somber reflection, it's a happy occasion too and while this song's a little on the silly (or should I say Jolly?) side as far as Christmas songs go, I love it. Burl Ives is the man, and his voice and guitar playing and this song in particular are everything that's good about Christmas songs to me. Christmas is a simple holiday, it's about being sincere, joyful, giving, loving, and just plain happy. This is a simple song that says it all. I just love how honest it is, it's exactly what it says on the tin, a holly jolly Christmas carol if ever there was one.
lyrics
Have a holly jolly Christmas
It's the best time of the year
I don't know if there'll be snow
But have a cup of cheer
Have a holly jolly Christmas
And when you walk down the street
Say hello to friends you know
And everyone you meet
Oh-oh the mistletoe
Hung where you can see
Somebody waits for you
Kiss her once for me
Have a holly jolly Christmas
And in case you didn't hear
Oh by golly have a holly jolly Christmas
This year!
Have a holly jolly Christmas
It's the best time of the year
Have a holly jolly Christmas
And when you walk down the street
Say hello to friends you know
And everyone you meet
Oh-oh the mistletoe
Hung where you can see
Somebody waits for you
Kiss her once for me
Have a holly jolly Christmas
And in case you didn't hear
Oh by golly have a holly jolly Christmas
This year!
